How Can You Benefit from Implant Dentistry?

Posted by Dr. Dadseresht on May 20 2020, 01:28 AM

Dental implantsare widely regarded as the best replacement for missing natural teeth. They are placed directly in the jawbone, which gives them the required stability and strength to withstand forces while biting and chewing food. Also, they can be customized to perfectly mimic the appearance of the natural teeth so that they remain indistinguishable. If you are looking for a long-term solution for your missing teeth, implants are by far the best option.

What makes implants better than their alternatives?

You may be wondering what implants have in special that their alternatives such as bridges and dentures do not. Here are some factors that help you understand this claim better:

Stability: The dentist will place a metal implant stud in the jawbone and allow it to adhere to the surrounding structure firmly. Though this requires a few months, the resultant will be a long-lasting restoration that is functional and aesthetically pleasing. It will stay stable when you carry out your everyday activities.

Strength: Implants are made from Titanium and dental-grade ceramic. Both these materials are highly-strong and can withstand abrasion and impact forces. However, we suggest you do not try to open bottle caps, rip open plastic bags, etc. with your prosthetic tooth.

Aesthetics: While the metal stud remains hidden under the gums, the visible ceramic crown can be customized in terms of color, texture, and contour to mimic your original tooth. Even if someone takes a closer look at it, they will not be able to distinguish it from the adjoining natural teeth.

Jawbone health: Placing an implant in the jawbone fills the gap left by the missing tooth. This prevents jawbone deterioration and also keeps the remaining teeth from drifting from their orthodontically right positions.

Long-lasting: The procedure for getting a dental implant may take several visits over a few months. But, once placed in the mouth, implants usually last for over ten years without any hassle.

What is the procedure involved?

The dentist will thoroughly diagnose your mouth and take a few scans and x-rays of the teeth and jawbone. This helps to determine if the jawbone has deteriorated or if the teeth have drifted from their positions. Depending on your candidacy for implants, the dentist will discuss the next steps in the procedure with you.

A tiny hole will be made in the jawbone where the missing tooth used to exist. The metal implant stud will be inserted in it and secured firmly with the help of dental cement. It might take a few months for the gums to heal and the jawbone to grow around the implant's grooves. Once it is completed, the dentist will schedule a second surgery to fix the crown to the implant. A connecting element called the abutment is used for this purpose, along with dental adhesives. The dentist will conduct a bite test and polish the implant to make it look as natural as possible.
