Dental Cleanings During Pregnancy

Posted by Dr. Dadseresht on Sep 28 2020, 06:54 PM

Dental cleanings should be continued during pregnancy. It is important to be consistent with oral hygiene practices before, during, and after pregnancy. It is suggested that the best time to plan a dental visit is during the second trimester (link 4). During the third trimester, it can be difficult to lay on your back long enough for treatment. Routine dental procedures such as cleaning, x-rays, pain medication, and local anesthesia are safe throughout pregnancy

There are a lot of noticeable changes to the mother’s body during pregnancy. Due to hormonal changes, gingivitis can be very common, and oftentimes go unnoticed. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums and, if left untreated, can result in periodontal (gum) disease, tooth loss, or preterm birth.

Frequent snacking can increase your risk for tooth decay. It is extremely important to continue to brush and floss twice a day to prevent the buildup of plaque on your teeth. If the toothpaste you use is aggravating morning sickness symptoms, try using a bland-flavored toothpaste. Be sure to rinse your mouth with water after any instance with morning sickness. Rinsing with water helps to remove the stomach acid from remaining in your mouth and on your teeth after vomiting.

Each pregnancy is unique, please discuss treatment options and medications with your primary care Physician and Dentist.
